9 December: lecture on Cape Verde and the turtles

The Catalan Center of Luxembourg invites you to the conference "Cap Verd: men and turtles, difficult cohabitation” (focused mainly on the case of the island of Sal), which will take place on Friday 9 December 2011 at 19.00 Center hours local Catalan Luxembourg (88, Rue de la Semois; Luxembourg Ville).

Cape Verde is a more and more popular tourist destination thanks to its fine sandy beaches, the turquoise waters, the perennial sun and a hospitable population. However, did you know that these same beaches are, for thousands of years, one of the most important spawning areas in the Atlantic for the loggerhead turtle? And did you know that the invasion of the beaches by man forces these turtles to leave them and makes it increasingly difficult for them to find a convenient place to lay their eggs? And you knew that, on summer nights, when the tourists have already returned to the hotel, these beaches are witness to a true massacre? That thousands of turtles die every year for the consumption of meat or eggs?

Josep Maria Cerdà, Member Center Catalan Luxembourg, participated this summer in an action to save and conserve turtles on the island of Sal and will tell us what is behind this hidden face of Cape Verde.

The conference will be in French. We warn that some images that will be projected there could hurt the sensibilities of the attendees.
