The Catalan Center of Luxembourg and the Luxembourg-Spain Association a.s.b.l. (IS.) you are invited to the tribute to Carmen Amaya that will take place on Friday 6 December 2013, at 19.00 hours, the local Catalan Luxembourg Centre (88, Rue de la Semois; L-2533 Luxembourg City).
This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the legendary Begur's death flamenco dancer Carmen Amaya. Born on 1918 in a shack in Barcelona's Somorrostro, Amaya left an indelible memory to all who were able to attend one of her performances, yes fos as tablaos Spaniards or at the White House in Washington. To pay tribute to him, we will screen the extraordinary film Los Tarantos (v.o. is). Directed on 1963 by Rovira Beleta, the piece has become a cult film not only for flamenco lovers but for all cinephiles, for its intrinsic quality and because it offers us some of the last dances of La Capitana and some of the first of a very young Antonio Gades.
The film will be presented (Spanish) by a great flamenco specialist, Montse Madrid. PhD in History of Music, Madridejos has written articles and given lectures on the history of flamenco in Barcelona and Catalonia in general. He has designed and developed all the contents of the web page www.historiasdeflamenco.com. The proper 28 November will present a biography in pictures about Carmen Amaya in Barcelona, written with David Pérez Merinero and foreworded by Juan Marsé.
Free entrance. Between the presentation and the screening, a glass of cava will be offered to all attendees.
