Description
I remember it departs radically from the conventions of the memoir genre. Each sentence begins “I remember…” and is followed by a single memory. The succession of memories - neither chronological nor thematic- that mix the most banal and the most transcendent, the particular with the apparently universal accumulate to form a complex portrait of the author's childhood over the years 1940 and 1950 and Oklahoma, as well as his life as an artist and homosexual over the years 1960 and 1970 a Nova York. Brainard himself wrote: “I feel like it's as much about everyone as it is about myself. And I like it. i mean, I feel like I'm everyone. And it's a nice feeling. It won't last. But I'm enjoying it while I can”. The first edition, from 1970, in a small editorial, sold out quickly, and expanded reprints and reissues followed with great success. I remember it has inspired many authors, among which we must highlight Georges Perec in his book Je me souviens which is dedicated to Brainard.
