Friday 20 in February we will close ours XXXIII Cycle of Cinema with a classic: The burnt city of Antoni Ribas. It will be at 18.30 to the Cinema Utopia.
The subtitle of this film from 1976 sums up the argument: From the Cuban disaster to the Tragic Week. The action begins, then, he 1899 with the defeat in the Cuban War, when two soldiers (interpreted by Xavier Elorriaga and Francesc Casares) they arrive in Barcelona. The burnt city retraces ten years of Catalonia's history up to 1909. There is a plot around two families in the city (a wealthy, a poor one) and one around the political and social conflicts of the time. The alternation of the narrative is one of the recognized merits of the film.
Antoni Ribas was able to make the project a reality thanks to a popular subscription and the contributions of 102 people or entities… what we would call one today crowdfunding. Well-known actors of the time take part: Xavier Elorriaga, Francesc Casares, Angela Molina, Pau Garsaball, Jeannine Mestre, Montserrat Salvador, Adolf Marsillach, José Luis López Vázquez, Ovid Montllor, Alfred Lucchetti, Núria Espert and Mary Santpere. You can also see personalities of the time with small roles, like now, Joan Manuel Serrat, Christa Leem, Heribert Barrera, Miquel Porter i Moix, Joan Reventós and Montserrat Roig.
A great production that we will be able to appreciate with a quality equal to or superior to that enjoyed by the almost one and a half million viewers at the time. It is so because the Film Library of Catalonia has given us a restored copy of the work.
