Description
Gogol never titled any book with the title Tales of Saint Petersburg and, Yet, this is how the gathering of five narratives is known, written between 1835 and 1842, published in various places and that, with the generic title of "Stories", they were gathered in the third volume of his Works (1842). This fact authorizes us to present to the Catalan public today, in a translation of enormous quality, only three stories, the most famous of the series. From the first, Dostoevsky claimed that he was the father of all new literature in his country—Nabókov, years later, had to qualify it as the best story ever written in the Russian language—; to the second, Pushkin found "so many unexpected things.", fantastic, fun and original", that convinced Gogol, that he felt undecided, to publish it; and the third is quite likely, com affirms Boris de Schloezer, the author's most acid and blackest story.
