Dinner and chat with Esther Tallada and Pau Vidal

Wednesday 6 March, at 19 hours, we set up a dinner and chat with Esther Tallada (translator) i Pau Vidal (philologist, translator, writer and crossword puzzler). In a distended format, accompanied by bread with tomato, we will be able to discuss everything with two top-level language and translation professionals.

Our guests will introduce themselves and invite you to ask all the questions you want. You can ask about language, literature, translation, crosswords, language policy, audiovisual media… Besides, Pau Vidal, that he makes every day Minimots of Vilaweb, will prepare us some special crosswords for the occasion. Whoever completes them the fastest, will take home a prize.

L’Esther Dry Carving she has a degree in Translation and Interpretation from the UPF, postgraduate in Linguistic Counseling in Audiovisual Media from the UAB and master's in Secondary Teacher Training, also by the UAB. He has been translating and proofreading for twenty-five years, jobs that he often combines with teaching.

In its editorial aspect, works mainly with literature, art books, exhibition catalogs, historical research volumes and exhibition projects, including that of the Casa Verdaguer de la Literatura that the MUHBA has installed in Vil·la Joana. In the literary field, he has translated authors such as George Orwell, Sherman Alexie, Angela Readman, Elizabeth Strout, Marilynne Robinson, William Faulkner i Daniel Defoe. He 2019 received the Crítica Serra d’Or prize for the translation into Catalan of August light, de Faulkner. On the other band, he 2022 has been a finalist for the first Aurora Bertrana translation award for The Wild Palms, Faulkner too.

In Pau Vidal Gavilán, which you may know from the lecture he gave us about the linguistic aspects of the coronavirus during confinement, he is a philologist by training and a linguistic evangelist by profession. You've probably seen it on TV or heard it on the radio. As a translator of Italian literature, he has specialized in contemporary narrative (The Leopard de Tomasi di Lampedusa, the work of Roberto Saviano is complete, The viceroys by Federico de Roberto, Antonio Tabucchi, Erri de Luca, Gianni Rodari…). Highlights, above all, the translation into Catalan of forty titles by Andrea Camilleri, the creator of Commissioner Montalbano. His last published title is A violent life, de Pierpaolo Pasolini. Combine these activities with those of writing, columnist and crossword puzzler.
