They will remain open from 9.00 at 16.00 hours to allow the administrative procedure to be done in person, very simple, to register as voters in the next municipal elections in Luxembourg. They will be held on June 11 2023 to elect the councilors of 102 municipalities of the country. You also have the possibility to do it electronically, and to present, via My Guichet.lu, if you have this option enabled.
In all cases you must make the registration effective before 17 d'April 2023, when the electoral census will be definitively closed in each municipality.
PARTICIPATING IN MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS IN LUXEMBOURG IS POSSIBLE AND INTERESTS EVERYONE.
It will be the first municipal elections in which non-Luxembourgish people can participate without having resided in the Grand Duchy for more than five years. precisely, shortly before the summer holidays of 2022, the Chamber of Deputies decided with a large majority to abolish the five-year residency requirement for all foreign residents, of the European Union or third countries. Consequently, any non-Luxembourg resident of 18 years or more that he is registered on the electoral rolls at least 55 days before the date of the municipal elections will enjoy the right to vote actively and passively. In other words that is, he can choose his candidates and be a candidate himself in his municipality of residence.
We believe it is important that the Catalan community resident in Luxembourg is a community committed to the country that welcomes us. It is therefore appropriate that we use the electoral participation mechanisms that the legislation allows us. We are a country on 48% of the resident population does not have Luxembourgish nationality. Per tant, it is important that our voice is expressed and that it is an active and participatory voice.
What do councils do??
The number of municipal councilors assigned to each municipality is determined by grand-ducal regulation. It depends on the number of inhabitants of the municipality and is always odd. Municipal councilors are elected for a period of 6 years. They are re-eligible. The people registered in the electoral census proceed to the direct election of the members of the communal council of their municipality of residence. Voters have as many votes as councilors make up the municipal council.
Municipal action includes the mandatory missions defined by the Constitution and the law: urban planning, water management, from waste, circulation, public roads, primary education, social assistance, others. They have, more, optional missions (sport, night transportation, nursery schools, social housing, etc.) that municipal authorities freely choose to offer. However, they will only choose to deal with it if the municipality has the necessary financial resources and if there is a favorable opinion of the voters of the municipality. And this opinion is expressed both in the elections and through other participation tools.
